Are You A Candidate For LASIK?

In general, the ideal candidate for LASIK is over 18 years of age and has healthy corneas. Candidates must not have had a significant increase in their prescription in the last 12 months. People with certain medical conditions or women who are pregnant may not be good candidates for LASIK.

What kind of results can I expect?

Depending on your prescription and how quickly you heal, LASIK results can be seen right away. Patients can often see a clock on the wall in the laser room immediately after surgery. Your vision will continue to improve over the next few months and your eye care doctor will measure your progress at your regularly scheduled appointments. Since LASIK permanently reshapes your cornea, your results last. Patients who have had the procedure up to ten years ago still enjoy their corrected vision. Only a small percentage of the over tens of thousand patients treated required an enhancement.

What does the procedure cost cover?

Your fee covers your consult, the pre-operative evaluation, your surgery, the facility fee, your medications and all of your post-operative care for one year!

Is LASIK covered by my insurance plan?

Not usually. There are a few that cover a portion and we encourage you to contact your employer direct. We work with several finance companies that allow monthly payments as low as $67.00 per month and we also take all major credits cards. Your flex spend account can also be used for LASIK.

Who are my doctors & what will they do?

At Woolfson Eye Institute, we believe that a close relationship between you, your regular eye care doctor and the surgeon, create the best team. You would make an appointment with your regular doctor who would evaluate you for the procedure. They would work with our Woolfson Eye Institute surgeon to develop the plan for your post-operative vision. There is a lengthy exam including several testing procedures that are performed before surgery. Be sure to allow several hours. After surgery, your doctor and the Woolfson Eye Institute surgeon will closely monitor your progress on day one, week one, month one, month three, month six and at your one year anniversary. You will be seen on an annual basis after that.

Will the procedure hurt?

LASIK is a painless procedure. There are no needles. Instead, we use anesthetic drops, which numb the surface of the eye just before we begin the procedure. You may experience a dry, scratchy sensation a few hours after surgery but most patients are quite comfortable after taking a short nap. The eye drops you are given to take home with you will also keep your eyes moist and help with the irritated feeling.

Are there any risks?

Less than 1% of all patients experience any vision reducing complications. There have been no reported cases of blindness resulting from LASIK. Our surgeons, along with your local eye care doctors, spend time getting to know you and your overall eye health. Careful review of all benefits and risks will be addressed at your pre-operative exam and again before you go into surgery. Be sure to have all of your questions answered. Our commitment is to patient care.

Does W.E.I. stand behind my results?

Absolutely! Woolfson Eye Institute (W.E.I.) stands behind the results of our surgeons. While we cannot guarantee that you will have perfect distance vision for a lifetime, we will do everything to help you maintain your best vision for life. Please ask us about our Lifetime Assurance Program. You are eligible for our lifetime commitment if you are in good general health, have been treated with laser vision correction at Woolfson Eye Institute and have a pre-operative prescription equal or less than the spherical equivalent of 10.00 diopters, and/or astigmatism of no greater than -3.00 diopters. Since 99% of the myopic and/or astigmatic population fall into this group, we expect that you will be able to benefit from this program. Please ask us for details.

What will my recovery be like?

Most LASIK patients usually see quite well the next day, but patients with higher prescriptions may recover more slowly. Although the speed of visual recovery depends on personal healing patterns, most patients notice dramatic visual results within the first few days following their procedure.
